Surgery not needed for Philip Rivers

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will not need surgery on his back.

Rivers played every game during the 2014 season but a bulging disk affected his play as the season wore down. Early in the season he was an MVP candidate with a 20:5 touchdown to interception ratio but by the second half that dropped to 11:13.

“At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery,” the 33-year-old Rivers said. “We’ll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I’m back to my regular workouts and running around.”

That Rivers does not need surgery is good news for his availability for the start of training camp.

Rivers will earn $15.57 million in the last year of his contract.
