Future of Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff tied to head coach hire

Divisional Playoffs - Houston Texans v New England Patriots
The future of Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff is tied to the organizations hiring of their next head coach. Falcons owner Arthur Blank is leading the search for a new head coach with Dimitroff’s status tied to the hire.

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, both Dimitroff and assistant Scott Pioli are angling for the Falcons to hire New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Dimitroff and Pioli both worked with McDaniels during their shared time with the Patriots years back. Their future with the Falcons could very well be tied to his hire. McDaniels had a brief tenure as the Broncos head coach before returning to the Patriots. He is best known as the guy who pushed the button to draft Tim Tebow.

As far as Blank goes he is believed to favor former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan. Blank wanted to land Ryan years ago but he spurred the Falcons and went to the Jets instead leading to the Mike Smith regime.

The Falcons have a talented offensive unit but lack pass rushers which have wrecked havoc on their defensive unit the last few seasons. All this is the fault of Dimitroff’s recent draft classes.
