It took longer than expected but quarterback Ryan Mallett has been traded to the Houston Texans.

Mallet made the 53-man roster for the New England Patriots on Saturday as the team opted to keep three quarterbacks on their roster but it was only so that the front office had more time to seek a trade. On Sunday the Patriots nabbed the Texans sixth round pick for the fourth-year player.

The Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is familiar with Mallett due to their time together with the Patriots. Still the 26-year-old has a long way to go before he proves he is ready to take over the Texans offense. In his regular season career Mallett has throw four passes completing just one for 17 yards while throwing an interception.

With the Texans sending Matt Schaub to Oakland the team signed Ryan Fitzpatrick in the offseason. Case Keenum and Tom Savage joined him on the 53-man roster on Saturday.

Jimmy Garoppolo won the backup job behind Tom Brady in New England.
