San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald was arrested on charges of domestic violence Sunday morning reports NBC Bay Area News.
Records show that the 29-year-old McDonald was booked early this morning and bail has not been set yet. He was also arrested for a DUI in 2010.
Just this week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell placed harsher penalties for all league employees involved in assault, battery, domestic violence or sexual assault. First-time offenders would receive a six-game suspension. A second offense will result in a lifetime ban.
The NFL domestic violence penalties come after criticism of Goodell following a two game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice who allegedly knocked his then-fiance unconscious.
McDonald has started 45 of 48 games since 2011 and was expected to again be a key to a defense which will start the season without Aldon Smith and NaVarro Bowman.
