Jaguars planning to use Toby Gerhart as every down back

The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to suggest that Toby Gerhart will be an every down back as he enters his first season with the team.

“Toby will be our workhorse,” offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch told the Florida Times Union last week.

Statements like those are largely based off of where the Jaguars have finished the last handful of seasons in rushing. In fairness the Jaguars have not held a lot of leads forcing them to pass the ball.

“Toby has the ability to do it all,” Fisch said. “He can catch it well. He can pass protect well, and he’s going to be in the game a lot — third down, base downs, short-yardage, passing downs.”

Jordan Todman and Denard Robinson will fall behind Gerhart on the dept chart.

“Those two guys are truly change-of-pace backs,” Fisch said. “Jordan really intrigues us with his burst, speed and acceleration. … I’m excited about Denard.”

In four seasons with the Vikings, Gerhart has run 276 times for 1,305 yards (4.7 avg) with five touchdowns.
