Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso suffered a torn ACL while working out in Oregon and will likely miss the entire 2014 season.

“We do not have the details at this point, but early indications are that it could be significant,” general manager Doug Whaley said in a statement Tuesday evening.

Alonso will need seven to nine months to recover from the ACL tear.

It is a tough break for the Bills after Alonso was third in the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year voting last season. His 159 tackles was third most in the NFL.

The Bills will now be looking for options to fill the weak side of their defense, where Alonso was expected to shift to this season.
