While it appeared that Josh McCown was certain to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback for the 2014 season the team has not written off incumbent Mike Glennon.

Glennon has already earned the title as quarterback of the future in Tampa Bay from head coach Lovie Smith. General manager Jason Licht says the quarterback – entering his second NFL season – has all the traits that Smith looks for in a quarterback.

“The three things — and Lovie and I were in complete agreement on this — are toughness, intelligence and accuracy,’’ Licht said during a segment on Sirius XM NFL Radio’s “Late Hits,” via the Tampa Tribune. “And then arm strength is a distant fourth.”

The Buccaneers did not draft a quarterback in this years draft, instead insisting that Glennon has a spot on the team. It is possible that both McCown and Glennon both see time under center this season.

“Mike showed during this process that he has those three things and he scored very high on those three things. Also, he’s an unassuming type of guy but guys around the building really look up to him and really follow him. So that’s what it came down to.”

As a rookie Glennon appeared in 13 games completing 59.4-percent of his passes for 2,608 yards and 19 touchdowns while throwing just nine interceptions.
