Cowboys interested in Julius Peppers and Henry Melton

There are numerous reasons to believe that the Dallas cowboys would have interest in free agent defensive lineman Julius Peppers. The biggest two being that the Cowboys need defensive bodies and Peppers has experience with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

According to ESPN Dallas the Cowboy are indeed interested in the 34-year-old who was recently released by the Chicago Bears.

Peppers was cut this week by the Bears because of his $13.9 million base salary and ridiculous $18.183 million salary cap figure. He had seven sacks for the Bears in 2013.

The Cowboys have also expressed interest in Henry Melton as they seek options to restock a defense which ranked at the bottom of nearly every statistic last season. Like Peppers, Melton also has a history with Marinelli and has expressed interest in playing for the Cowboys.

Currently the Cowboys have $7 million to play with under the cap. It is hard to envision them landing both players with that space.

ultiple sources” tell ESPN Dallas the Cowboys have interest in free agent Julius Peppers.

It’s the first we’ve heard of Peppers since his Tuesday release. Reporter Todd Archer’s report has no mention of a potential visit. Peppers would be reuniting with former Bears DC Rod Marinelli in Dallas, whom he played for from 2010-12 in Chicago. The fact that the Cowboys are interested means they believe Peppers could be signed for (far) less than the three-year, $30 million deal DeMarcus Ware landed in Denver. Peppers certainly isn’t going to match Ware, but he’s not going to be a bargain, either.
