Browns trying to void Devone Bess 2014 contract

The Clevleand Browns are working on a way to void the contract of wide receiver Davone Bess for the 2014 season.

Bess was acquired from the Miami Dolphins last season and the Browns handed the 28-year-old a contract with just over $3 million guaranteed for 2014.

He responded with 42 catches for 362 yards and two touchdowns before missing the last two games of the season as the Browns placed him on the non-football illness list.

Pro Football Talk reports that “While the Browns exercised their discretion to pay his salary for the rest of 2013, the team believes (we’re told) that the guarantees evaporated as a result of his inability to play in 2013.”

Voiding contracts is not an easy task in any sport. Whether or not the Browns can get out of paying Bess for 2014 will come down to the wording of his contract.
