Lions still behind David Akers but working out other kickers

David Akers is still the kicker for the Detroit Lions for now.

Akers missed his fifth field goal attempt of the season in Thanksgiving Day’s win over the Green Bay Packers. On the season Akers is 15-of-20 following a season in which he struggled as the kicker of the San Francisco 49ers.

Just before halftime on Thanksgiving Day, Akers missed a 31 yard attempt.

“I told him after halftime that if we need a game-winner, we’re going to put him right back up,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said, via Detroit Free Press. “We’re not going to be going for it on fourth down.”

The Lions will host some free agent kickers but apparently are not quite ready to move on from Akers just yet. Akers is 29th in the NFL in field goal percentage.
