The Minnesota Vikings announced on Friday that they would start backup quarterback Matt Cassel for Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh.

Cassel had been working with the first team this week, including during Friday’s practice session. Head coach Leslie Frazier had said during the week that the team wanted Christian Ponder to play but his rib injury has kept him from practicing this week.

If Cassel performs well there is a good chance he will keep the starting quarterback job for the team. Currently 0-3 the Vikings are in desperate need of a win to have any chance of returning to the playoffs.

Cassel appeared in nine games with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012 completing 58.1 percent of his passes for 1796 yards, six touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also committed seven fumbles.
