Jets release backup QB Brady Quinn

Kansas City Chiefs v Green Bay Packers

The New York Jets released backup quarterback Brady Quinn on Saturday in a move that avoids guaranteeing his contract for the 2013 season.

Quinn, 28, was picked up by the Jets after Mark Sanchez suffered a shoulder bruise.

The Jets will go with Geno Smith as the starter and Matt Simms as the backup in their game against Tampa Bay. Quinn could be added shortly after Week 1 as his salary will not be guaranteed for the season at that point.

Jeremy Kerley is listed as the Jets emergency quarterback this week.

Quinn was cut by Seattle earlier this preseason after serving as a starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Quinn threw just two touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2012.
