The New England Patriots cut a pair of tight ends on Friday.
With the releasing of Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells the Patriots sent a message that they expect Rob Gronkowski to avoid the PUP list to start the season.
Ballard, 25, never made it above third on the depth chart and his bad knees have taken away any assets he could have brought a team.
The #Patriots have cut TE Daniel Fells, source tells me. Signed a three-year, $5.25M contract last year.

The 29-year-old Fells was cut prior to starting the season which will save the Patriots $1.25 million against the cap. He was in the second year of a three-year deal worth $5.25 million. Fells has just 23 catches over the last two seasons, a number that is not expected to rise now that he is a free agent.
These cuts would seem to increase the likelihood that Tim Tebow will be on the Patriots 53-man roster.
