Sean Payton signs five year deal with Saints

Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints have agreed on a five-year contract extension reports various news outlets. The details of the deal have not been announced but it is expected to be similar to the one the NFL disapproved earlier this year.

“Very happy that it is offical. Never had any doubts though,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said in a text message to the New Orleans Times Picayune.

The Saints were given written permission by the NFL to negotiate a contract extension with the suspended Payton in November.

The original extension was rejected by the league because it contained a clause allowing Payton to leave if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended or departed the organization.

Payton has missed the entire 2012 season as he serves a suspension stemming from the bounty investigation by the NFL.

This season marks the first time the Saints have missed the playoffs since 2008.
