Report: Norv Turner and GM A.J Smith to be fired at season end

According to Kevin Acee at the Union-Tribune, San Diego Chargers owner Dean Spanos plans to fire both coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith at season’s end.

They say that the decision was made nearly a month ago and that it is final. President Spanos is waiting for season end due to any faith in the Chargers’ microscopic playoff chances.

It is not known who will take over for Turner, but Jimmy Raye who currently is Director of Player Personnel is the apparent replacement for Smith.

The Chargers will owe Smith $4 million for his remaining two years and Turner $3 million for the final year of his contract.

Turner has coached San Diego since 2007. He is 53-38 with the Chargers during that time but the team has not made the playoffs since 2009. Last season they finished 8-8, they are currently 4-7 this season.

Smith joined the Chargers as Assistant General Manager in 2002. He became GM in 2003 after John Butler passed away.

What do you think – is it time for them to go?
