Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher kills girlfriend, self

Police say a 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs player was involved in two shootings Saturday, one of which occurred in the parking lot near Arrowhead Stadium.

While the name of the player was not provided, reports are now saying it was Jovan Belcher. Belcher was an undrafted free agent in 2009. After the 2012 season, Belcher was given a second-round tender by the Chiefs.

Police Supervisor Andrea Khan said the first shooting happened in a Kansas City, Mo., neighborhood and the second happened at Arrowhead Stadium, about five miles away, at about 8 a.m. Saturday.

Albert Breer of the NFL Network reported that the mother of the murdered woman called police and told them that her daughter had been shot. Police arrived at the Chiefs’ facility only to find the player in question in the parking lot with a gun to his head. As one officer got out of his car, he heard a gunshot. The player was later pronounced dead.

The Chiefs issued a statement saying, “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

Kansas City (1-10) will host the Carolina Panthers (3-8) this weekend at Arrowhead Stadium.
