Romeo Crennel fires himself as defensive coordinator of Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are 1-7 this season and are a mess on nearly all phases of football. With Crennel knowing the flaws of the defense he did what any head coach/defensive coordinator would do.

He fired himself as the defensive coordinator for a unit who had allowed 30 points per game, 29th in the NFL.

Gary Gibbs will take over as the team’s defensive coordinator. The Chiefs also made a few other moves to try and improve the defense.

Cornerback Stanford Routt was waived by the team. He had signed a three-year $18 million deal with the Chiefs after Brandon Carr departed for Dallas. Javier Arenas will take Routts position in the starting lineup.

The Chiefs also signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith.  Smith has not played since being waived by the Tennessee Titans in August. A nine year player out of South Carolina, Smith will act as depth for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs next game is at Pittsburgh on Sunday night.
