No Surprise: Manny Machado not being shopped

The Baltimore Orioles surely would love to lock up third baseman Manny Machado to a long-term contract but thus far it looks like the 25 year old will play out the remaining year on his contract and enter free agency.

Jon Heyman of Fan Rags says that there is zero chance the club trades the star whose expected contract should rival that of Giancarlo Stanton, far outpacing the $161 million given to firse basemen Chris Davis a few years ago.

Heyman claims though a source the Orioles were close to locking up Machado a few years ago but concerns over his knee injuries prevented them from doing so. If that is true, that will prove to be quite costly if the team does indeed make another attempt to sign him to an extension.

While Machado’s 2017 season will fall short of his 2016 season where he set career highs of 37 homers, a .294 average and an .876 OPS they are still more than deserving of a long term deal. Machado enters Thursday with a .264/.318/.484 line with 32 homers and is just four RBI short of matching his total from a year ago.  A strong August won his player of the month honors in the American League.
