Early in the season White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez enjoyed some brief success. Of course his success was caught by surprise and of course hope on the South Side that the veteran righty was actually as good as his early season numbers.

When White Sox analyst Steve Stone began talking about the Cy Young award one evening and the success Gonzalez had I could not believe my ears. This is Miguel Gonzalez he had a few good outings he had not suddenly turned into Mike Mussina. See I didn’t reach into Greg Maddux or Roger Clemens territory with my thinking. Sure Mussina never won a Cy Young but he was typically one to consider.

Menawhile between Stone’s comments and today the 32-year-old has not fallen below even his career norms. He finished last year with a 3.73 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP fine numbers I will point out but now with is latest speed bump coming in the form of Paul Goldschmidht’s earth shattering homer last night he sits at 4.55 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. So long award ceremony.

Gonzalez has pitched 5, 5 2/3, and 5 innings in ihis last three outings and allowed 14 earned runs. If you expand his numbers to cover his last five it does not get any better because you would have to include that six run outing against the Tigers.

Fantasy Spin

So what do we make of Gonzalez? Well he’s not as good as he was in his first four outings but he cannot be as bad as his last three games either. Since Gonzalez is not a strike out artist, the White Sox are .500 at best and even on his good day he will give up a couple of runs there is no fantasy appeal in Gonzalez. But most of you knew that entering the season. Gonzalez’s best value comes to the White Sox as he can eat up innings in the rotation.
