The Tigers have designated infielder Jefry Marte for assignment to make room for the newly signed Justin Upton.
With a spot on the 40-man roster needed, the Tigers jettison Marte who appeared in 33 games for the team last season. The 24-year-old managed a .213/.284/.413 line with four home runs over 90 plate appearances.
Upton landed a six-year deal with the Tigers worth $132.75 million which includes an opt out after the second year.
