The Seattle Mariners have failed to produce at the plate this season and have now hired a new hitting coach. Edgar Martinez has been named the new hitting coach taking over the position which was recently held by Howard Johnson.

Martinez spent 18 seasons with the Mariners tallying 2,247 hits and a .312/.418/.515 career line.

Johnson has been reassigned to a different position within the Mariners organization. The Mariners entered Saturday six games under .500 in large part because they are last in the majors with a .233 average and are 29th in runs scored.
