Melvin Upton, formerly known as B.J., will miss all of spring training after being diagnosed with sesamoiditis in his left foot.
Upton’s inflammation is occurring in the bone behind the ball of his foot. He will be in a cast for two weeks and a walking foot for the 4-6 weeks after that.
This is not the start of the year that Upton needed after his first two seasons in Atlanta have resulted in a mere .198/.279/.314 line. Without him the Braves will now turn to a combination of Eury Perez, Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte in center field.
