The Astros have signed free agent pitcher Roberto Hernandez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Hernandez, 34, could not find a major league deal this winter after posting a 4.10 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 105/73 K/BB ratio in 164 2/3 innings last season between the Phillies and Dodgers.
The Astros could use Hernandez – who formerly was known as Fausto Carmona – as a back of the rotation starter or in the bullpen. Regardless of his name, Hernandez has not been a realiable major leaguer since the 2010 season when he was with the Indians. The Astros are buying low here.
