The Rays have taken their time to find the replacement for manager Joe Maddon who left to take over the Chicago Cubs earlier this offseason.
Cash was chosen over Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu to replace Maddon.
Cash spent parts of eight seasons at the big league level playing for the Blue Jays, Rays, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Houston Astros. He finished his career with a .183 average, 12 home runs and 58 RBI.
Earlier this offseason Cash lost out on his bid to become the manager of the Texas Rangers as they opted for Jeff Bannister.
