The Red Sox have had their eye on landing Pablo Sandoval in free agency but are making contingency plans nonetheless.
Juan Francisco has been claimed off waivers by the Red Sox from the Blue Jays. Currently Francisco would figure to occupy a platoon at third base with Will Middlebrooks but all that could change should the Red Sox land Sandoval. A deal for Sandoval could push the Red Sox to simply cut Francisco rather than paying him the $2.2 million he is projected to make in arbitration.
Seemingly always long on power, Francisco belted 16 home runs in 320 at-bats last year but produced just a .220/.291/.456 line overall.
