Josh Johnson did not play during the 2014 season and after a second Tommy John surgery is questionable to start the 2015 season.
With the knowledge the Padres have declined a $4 million option on the 30-year-old. Both sides are said to be interested in working out a smaller deal which would contain incentives.
The 6-foot-7 Johnson has proven to be a valuable rotation member when healthy but has spent more time on the disabled list then on the active roster of late.
Johnson has made just 56 starts since the start of the 2011 season. In 2013 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays he was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP in 16 starts.
