New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka threw a simulated game on Thursday morning at Comerica Park.
Tanaka, 25, is attempting to return to the mound this season after being diagnosed with a torn UCL. The rookie import is hoping to avoid Tommy John surgery.
Joe Girardi pleased with Tanaka's outing and says he would return only as a starter and not in relief

According to manager Joe Girardi, Tanaka’s 49-pitch session went well. This is the latest good news for Tanaka. If the Yankees brought Tanaka back this year it would only be as a starter.
There is still no timetable for when Tanaka could return to the mound but the chance still exists. In 18 starts thus far he is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.
