The Texas Rangers have signed catcher J.R. Towles to a minor league contract assigning him to Triple-A Round Rock.

Towles, 30, was once a highly thought of prospect in the Houston Astros farm system. He had spent five months of this year playing in the independent Atlanta League.

Back in 2007 Towles set an Astros record with 8 RBI in a game against St. Louis setting a franchise record.

Towles has not appeared in a major league game since the 2011 season. In 155 big league games he owns a .187/.267/.315 line with 11 home runs and 50 RBI.
