The Atlanta Braves moved a game closer to the Washington Nationals in the NL East with a 3-1 win on Sunday night.
Braves starter Alex Wood pitched into the eighth inning before giving way to the bullpen. Wood walked Jayson Werth before getting Adam LaRoche to strike out in the eighth. At that point manager Fredi Gonzalez lifted Wood for reliever David Carpenter. Carpenter induced an inning ending double play.
Craig Kimbrel would record the final three outs of the game for the Braves.
The Nationals struck first with an Ian Desmond home run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning Justin Upton would even up the score.
Outfielder Jason Heyward singled in a run in the fifth inning and Evan Gattis would add an insurance run in the eighth with a line drive to left field.
With the win the Braves are now 3.5 games behind the Nationals.
