The Arizona Diamondbacks have released relief pitcher J.J. Putz.
Putz, 37, was designated for assignment last week and becomes a free agent. The Diamondbacks are left to pay the remainder of his $7 million salary for this season leaving him available to the rest of the league for the minimum.
It has been a tough 2014 season for Putz who has a 6.59 ERA across 18 games. Prior to this season Putz had compiled a 2.56 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in 200 2/3 innings of work the previous four seasons. He had a 229/55 K/BB ratio during that span. Those numbers will lead him to getting another chance.
