Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland will undergo season ending surgery on his injured left ankle. Moreland will join Prince Fielder (neck) as first baseman the Rangers have lost for the season.

Brad Snyder and Donnie Murphy have been seeing time at first base since Moreland became injured. The team added veteran free agent Carlos Pena via a minor league contract on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Moreland was hitting .246/.297/.347 with two home runs and 23 RBI in 52 games this season. Barring a significant setback he should be ready come spring training next year.
