On Thursday Pirates manager Clint Hurdle moved Jason Grilli back into the closers role.

It had been six days since Grilli had been activated from the disabled list. Mark Melancon had been serving in the closers role but he will now return to the eighth inning. That domino effect will continue throughout the Pirates bullpen.

“He’s ready to go,” Hurdle said simply, of Grilli, “and everyone will move up accordingly. The biggest challenge will be to help Jason with his health — this being his second injury.”

Grilli missed a month of action with a strained left oblique. He missed time in the second half of 2013 after suffering a right forearm strain.

“We’ll keep an eye on his pitches, and get together on what is a serviceable number for him to come back the next day,” Hurdle said.
