Seriously, what took so long?

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday that they will retire the No. 6 which had been worn by former manager Joe Torre.

With the retiring of the No. 6 and Derek Jeter’s retirement at the end of this season the Yankees will no longer have any single digit numbers available.

Below is a list of single digit number which have or will be retired by the Yankees

Here are the single digit numbers retired by the Yankees:

  1. Billy Martin
  2. Derek Jeter*
  3. Babe Ruth
  4. Lou Gehrig
  5. Joe DiMaggio
  6. Joe Torre
  7. Mickey Mantle
  8. Yogi Berra/Bill Dickey
  9. Roger Maris

The No. 10 has been retired for Phil Rizzuto. Brett Gardner, who wears No. 11, is the lowest digit on the Yankees roster.

Torre managed the Yankees from 1996-2007 winning four World Series. Torre is currently the Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and will be part of the 2014 MLB Hall of Fame class.
