The Los Angeles Angels will begin the season with John McDonald on their bench.

McDonald, 39, will serve as a utility infielder for the team. Ideally he will not see the field often but if he does he gives the Angels flexibility to play across the infield.

Not known for his bat, McDonald appeared in 51 games last season hitting .118/.197/.174 for Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Boston.

Nationals release Gonzalez

The Washington Nationals have released left handed pitcher Mike Gonzalez.

A non-roster invitee to camp, the 35-year-old Gonzalez was unable to land a bullpen spot. He allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk during his four innings of spring play.

Someone will take a gamble on Gonzalez for 2014. He appeared in 75 games last season finishing with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.
