The Houston Astros have signed relief pitcher Jesse Crain to a one-year contract.
Crain did not pitch after June 29 after suffering a right shoulder strain. He underwent surgery in October to fix inflammation in his biceps.
Financial terms of the deal have not been released but Crain immediate becomes an option to close for the Astros despite a lack of experience in the role. He had a 0.74 ERA in 38 games in 2013.
The Astros are not expected to compete this season and could flip Crain at the trade deadline for a mid-level prospect.
