Chris Carpenter, pitcher for the St Louis Cardinals is attempting to come back from chronic nerve disorder but the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner realizes he has a lot to do before he returns to St. Louis.

“I have a long way to go before I can get outs up there,” Carpenter told the St. Louis Dispatch. “If I can’t get outs down here, never mind getting outs up there.”

Carpenter allowed four runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings for Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

“I didn’t feel like I was as sharp as I needed to be or should have been,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter threw in the 89-91 mph range and topped out at 95 mph but he did not have his stuff when he needed it. Ten of his last 14 hitters faced reached base.

The Cardinals will have him throw a bullpen session on Monday and then make two more rehab starts this month.
