Red Sox acquire Matt Thornton from White Sox

It will not be as simple as changing his socks but that is exactly what left handed reliever Matt Thornton will do. On Friday the Chicago White Sox sent the veteran left hander to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Brandon Jacobs.

Thornton has long been considered one of the best lefties in baseball and his departure from the White Sox does not figure to be the last prior to the trade deadline.

In 28 innings this season, Thornton posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 21/10 K/BB. In Boston he will serve in much the same capacity as he did in Chicago.

The return for Thornton for the White Sox was outfield prospect Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs, 22, was hitting .246/.334/.444 across two levels of the minors this season.
