Bat retrieving dog for Yankees farm team passes away

Chase, a bat retrieving dog, has passed away.

The 13-year-old golden retriever had retrieved bats and provided umpires with water for the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder.

Earlier this year the Yankees invited the dog to Yankee Stadium and on Friday the Thunder threw a party for him.

Chase began his career with Trenton in 2002 and was diagnosed with lymphoma and arthritis in February, His legacy will be carried on by his son Derby. Another son, Ollie, performs with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

The Thunder released the following statement on their website:

“Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years,” said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. “His presence at ARM & HAMMER Park or in the community was the epitome of the wholesome family entertainment for which we strive. Our ball players, staff, season ticket holders and all the men, women and children who he entertained and interacted with over the past decade will miss him dearly.”
