Terry Francona plans to start Mark Reynolds at third base with the demotion of Lonnie Chisenhall. Reynolds is a liability at third base but one the Indians are willing to live with as long as he continues to swing a hot bat.

Reynolds has been one of the surprise story lines to open the 2013 season as he owns a .279/.368/.598 line and a major league best 11 home runs.

“Part of what makes this team so much fun to manage is the versatility we have,” said Francona, via The Plain Dealer. “Mark has gone from first to third to DH. And he’s done it willingly and not grudgingly.”

“I think he’ll get a lot of at bats there and I think he likes it.”

Known as a free swinger Reynolds has struck out 32.3% of his plate appearances at the major league level but has lowered that number to just 25.7% this season.

By moving Reynolds to third base the Indians open up additional playing time for Jason Giambi and Ryan Raburn at designated hitter.
