Mark Teixeira eyeing early May return to Yankees, Girardi optimistic

The New York Yankees started the season without several stars. One of the biggest absences to the Yankees lineup has been first basemen Mark Teixeira who has been out due to a strained right wrist.

Teixeira is expected to make a late-May or early-June return to the Yankees but the 32-year-old told MLB.com that he is shooting for a return of May 1.

“That’s my goal, to play for the Yankees, I hope, by May 1,” Teixeira told MLB.com before New York hosted the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in the second game of the season for both teams. “I hope. That would be great.”

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told the Newark Star-Ledger that he was “optimistic in general” and said that “I hope that’s a possibility.”

It is hard to pinpoint a date for Teixeira’s return as he has yet to swing a bat with both arms.
