Just two years ago Ricky Romero was a 15 game winner for the Toronto Blue Jays who posted an ERA under 3.00, on Tuesday he was optioned to the minor leagues.

The Toronto Blue Jays have awarded the fifth spot in their rotation to J.A. Happ. Happ, a left-hander, compiled a 1.89 ERA and a 14/3 K/BB ratio this spring in 19 innings of work. Happ made 28 appearances with the Blue Jays last season including 24 starts.

Happ’s reward has come at the expense of Romero.

Romero struggled for much of the 2012 season and things never turned around this spring. In 13 innings of work the 28-year-old ended up with a 6.23 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP.

The Blue Jays have sent him to High-A Dunedin to work out his mechanics. A week ago the Blue Jays noticed that Romero was throwing across his body more now then he had in the past.
