Rangers sign Lowe, out on Lohse

With the signing of Derek Lowe the Rangers added depth to their starting rotation in case of injury. The move may have eliminated any interest the team has in free agent Kyle Lohse.

Lowe, 39, was 9-11 with a 5.11 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP while splitting time between the Indians and Yankees last season.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News says that he”almost certainly makes the team.” After the Yankees picked him up the right hander was used strictly as a middle reliever, a role he figures to occupy with the Rangers.

The Lowe signing may not have been the driving force but the Rangers are not going to sign Kyle Lohse, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.

Sullivan was told that the Rangers were not signing the 34-year-old right hander. “I can’t be clearer than that,” the source added.

Recent reports had suggested that the Rangers had interest in Lohse but perhaps the team saw enough out of their other options for the fifth starters spot which should return to Colby Lewis once he is healthy.

Hampering Lohse’s market is that he is tied to draft pick compensation.
