Indians add former All-Star reliever Matt Capps

The Cleveland Indians have signed veteran reliever Matt Capps to a minor league deal. Capps pitched well in the first half of the 2012 season but missed almost the entire second half while dealing with shoulder issues.

By signing Capps to a minor league deal the Indians have little-to-no financial concerns should the 29-year-old prove to be unhealthy when the season starts. Should Capps be healthy he would figure to have the inside track to claiming a bullpen spot on the team.

Last season Capps pitched 29 1/3 innings for the Minnesota Twins and posted a 3.68 ERA and a 18/4 K/BB ratio. Capps recorded 14 saves for the Twins last season. Capps has recorded 14 or more saves in each of the last six seasons and was the winning pitcher of the 2010 All-Star Game for the National League.

Cleveland currently has Chris Perez on their roster. Perez has been selected to the All-Star game the last two seasons while notching 75 saves.
