Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has spoken with free-agent third baseman Scott Rolen about joining the team for the 2013 season. Rolen has not made a decision about whether he will continue his playing career.
The Cincinnati Reds, where he has played the last four seasons, are also waiting for an answer from Rolen in regards to 2013.
At 38 it is unclear how much Rolen would benefit any team on the field. He has played just 157 games the last two seasons and underwent surgery on his left shoulder in 2011.
Rolen has taken a dip at the plate and in the field over the last two years.
Mattingly sees Rolen as an option at third base in case Luis Cruz struggles as well as an option behind Adrian Gonzalez at first.
