Josh Hamilton says Rangers had first shot, never offered contract

The Texas Rangers watched outfielder Josh Hamilton sign with division rival Los Angeles days after both teams lost out on Zack Greinke. Reports came out that the Rangers were speaking to Hamilton in the days leading up with his signing with the Angels, though Hamilton says a contract was never offered.

Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday Hamilton refuted the notion that he had told the Rangers that they would be given the final shot to match or top an offer.

While Hamilton’s time with the Rangers is up, he told Patrick he was not offended by the way things worked out.

Before the season started Hamilton told John Heyman of CBS Sports that he did not feel he owed the Rangers anything.

The Angels now figure to have one of baseball’s better lineups as they will add Hamilton to a team that already has a three time MVP in Albert Pujols and a young outfielder who nearly won the award in his rookie season in Mike Trout.

The Rangers did make a move on Thursday bringing in catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
