Angels give Joe Blanton $15 million over two years

Tommy Hanson and Joe Blanton will help fill two spots in the Los Angeles Angels rotation next season. The latter signed a two year deal worth $15 million on Wednesday. The deal also reportedly has an option for a third year.

If you think that seems like a lot of money for Blanton you are not likely to be alone. Blanton is coming off a season that saw him finish 10-12 with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. The ERA is the lowest in a season since 2009 while the WHIP is Blanton’s lowest since 2007.

Its a hefty price to pay for a guy who projects as little more then a end of the rotation starter. Blanton will turn 32 next week and figure to be slated behind Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Hanson in the rotation.
