B.J Upton agrees to deal with the Atlanta Braves, pending physical

The Atlanta Braves and free agent center fielder B.J Upton have agreed to terms, CBSSports Jon Heyman has reported. The 28-year-old Upton is coming off a season in which he batted .246/.298/.454 for the Rays with 28 homers and 31 steals in 37 attempts.

Upton provides the Braves with right-handed power in their lineup. He has hit 70 homers since 2009, ninth among center fielders, but also struck out 169 times last year.

Once finalized, Upton’s deal will be worth $75.25 million over five years, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports reported.

The signing of Upton certainly means that the Braves will part ways with incumbent center fielder Michael Bourn, who’s also a highly coveted free agent. The Washington Nationals are now the leading contender to sign Bourn.
