The Cleveland Indians have pegged Terry Francona to be their next manager. The Indians are just waiting for Francona to sign the contract. The Indians are hoping that bringing in Francona can stabilize a young team that withered in the second half of the baseball season.
Francona won two World Series titles while with the Boston Red Sox. He managed them for nine seasons but was fired after a late season collapse in 2011.
The 53-year-old Francona was offered the Indians’ job on Saturday, the person told the Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the sides were still trying to finalize a deal. Francona likely will be introduced at a news conference on Monday. Francona severed as a special adviser to the club in 2001. He had been serving as a baseball commentator on ESPN.
Sandy Alomar Jr. was also considered for the position. Alomar took over the team after Manny Acta was fired with just a handful of games left. Last season Alomar was considered for the Red Sox position before the team choose the recently fired Bobby Valentine.
