Jeff Gordon will bring back stache again… if he's in contention

RELATED: Is Jeff Gordon no longer a title contender?

Jeff Gordon said he shaved off the stache because he was not a contender for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup title. The four time champion said that should he get back into contention then the stache will return.

Gordon vowed before the start of the Chase, NASCAR’s version of a post season, that he would grow a mustache reminiscent of his 1993 season. Gordon did make the Chase and began growing out the stache.

Unfortunately for Gordon his throttle hung during the Chase opening race at Chicagoland Speedway and resulted in a 35th place finish. Gordon is currently 47 points behind Brad Keselowski for the points lead. An amount that will require some bad fortune for drivers above him even if 86 time race winner finds victory lane today at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Gordon getting back into the title picture seems like a tough task. Over the course of eight seasons of the Chase these eventual championship winners combined for just five finishes outside the top-twenty five. Only three of those finishes were worse then the 35th place finish of Gordon on Sunday.
