In this system that we’re trying to figure out who is going to be the number one it’s all about competition. That’s why everybody involved is excited about it.”

Signs would seem to point to the veteran Cassel being the favorite to open the season as the Bills starter as Manuel continues to be a rumored cut by the end of training camp. Tuel on the other hand has proven to be ineffective during his brief time in the NFL and Taylor thus far has proven to be nothing more than a journeyman backup.

“He’s been exactly what we expected,” said Whaley of Cassel. “A veteran force who can galvanize the team and he can teach the young guys the intricate things that quarterbacks do that doesn’t take place on the field. Bringing receivers in and talking about preferences and what he’s seeing. Basically a lot of the things that people on the outside don’t see. He’s done that and he’s not afraid of the challenge.
